Our Vision
Our vision is to nurture a love for language, critical thinking, and empathy through innovative, student-centred learning experiences. We strive to provide student-centred learning experiences that are meaningful, engaging, and tailored to our boys.
Key Pedagogical Emphases
Our teaching approach is built on three core pillars:
Multiliteracies: Students engage with language across multiple forms – speaking, listening, writing, reading and viewing. Through supported reading and retelling, we help our boys build confidence and fluency as they make sense of texts in diverse media.
Metacognition: We empower our boys to understand how they think and learn. Using strategies like think-alouds, annotation, and noticing, students become aware of their thought processes and language choices, fostering independent and reflective learning habits.
Inquiry through Dialogue: Language thrives when ideas are shared. Through purposeful group discussions and collaborative text analysis, students learn to express themselves clearly, listen respectfully, and construct shared understanding.

Our Four Key Pillars & Enrichment Programmes
At MJS, English Language education extends beyond reading and writing - it is about nurturing the whole child.
Academic Excellence — Enriched HAL Curriculum: Designed for High-Ability Learners (HAL), this programme deepens reading comprehension and communication through extended Reading Circles and challenging, authentic learning modules.
Reading Culture — Weekly Library Periods & MJS Book Week: Regular library visits foster consistent exposure to diverse genres, while MJS Book Week brings stories to life, helping students discover that reading is a joy.
Empathy in Action — Read for Books: In partnership with the National Library Board (NLB), our boys read with a purpose. For every 10 readers who read for 15 minutes, a book is donated to charity—connecting literacy with social responsibility and community impact.
Creative Expression — Stories Come Alive (Book Character Day): Students dress up as their favorite book characters to step into others' shoes, exploring different perspectives and developing empathy through storytelling.
